On Thursday,
May 9th, as part of a statewide media event, three ambulances traveled
across the state to different hospitals collecting petition forms (see
below)
from nurses, then delivered them STAT to legislators at the Massachusetts
State House with the critical message that we need safe staffing legislation. Click here to read more about this event.
From May 1 – May 7, the MNA called-on nurses through
out the state to go out into their communities and collect signatures for
a Nurses Week "Safe-RN-Staffing Petition Drive". Nurses gathered
these signatures from Massachusetts citizens in support of the passage of House
Bill 1186, the quality patient care/safe staffing legislation that would regulate nurse-to-patient ratios.
Quality care is every registered
nurse's primary objective. That's why patients view nurses as essential to good medical
care. The public has enormous faith in the capabilty of registered
nurses. They know that when RNs are allowed to function effectively,
every patient benefits.
The fewer patients a nurse is assigned,
the better the care every patient will receive. That is why the MNA
has launched this campaign to pass safe staffing legislation and ensure safe
patient care. Quality Patient Care/Safe Staffing legislation will make
it mandatory for hospitals to provide the right number of registered nurses
to care for hospital patients.

a safe ratio of nurses to patients.
