THANKS TO Dr. Marcia Angell for her efforts to promote single-payer healthcare (Op-ed, May 23). Americans have been waiting more than 60 years for our private for-profit healthcare industry to prove that it can serve us better than the type of national nonprofit single-payer system that other industrialized countries have adopted. Instead of progress, the health of Americans gets worse and worse as our costs go higher and higher with more and more people uninsured. The private insurers are good at one thing – scaring people about changing to what works for so many other people in the world. We have given this private industry enough chances. It’s about time we try a national nonprofit single-payer system.
