Making the case they are underpaid compared to other staff, school nurses have filed for a state mediator to settle a longstanding contract dispute with the Medford school district.

The nurses say they are required to meet the same educational standards as teachers, psychologists, counselors and other school employees, yet they are paid almost 20 percent less, according to a June 27 press release from the Massachusetts Nurses Association.

The 11 school nurses provide coverage for nine Medford schools, serving a total population of more than 5,000 students.

Starting next school year, the nurses must also adhere to a new educator evaluation system.

The nurses claim they have faced repeated delays since first filing to reopen their contract in October 2011, eight months before the agreement was set to expire.
