Last week, the Massachusetts Teachers Association and other members of the Massachusetts Education Justice Alliance held a Week of Action on Charter Schools to raise public awareness about how charter schools impact students in district public schools.
Topics ranged from the lack of control the public has over charter schools, to how the schools’ discipline policies and high suspension rates lead to push-outs and poor outcomes for some students, and how, unlike charter schools, public schools serve all children.
Now the MTA is asking residents across Massachusetts, including members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association, to reach out to their lawmakers. The MTA’s message: "Undemocratic charter schools siphon funds from district public schools that serve all students."
Please contact your legislators right away and urge them to oppose lifting the cap on Commonwealth charter schools. Ask them to support S. 326, an MTA bill filed by Sen. Marc Pacheco (D-Taunton) to impose a three-year moratorium on the approval of new charter schools.
