CANTON, Mass – The Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United (MNA/NNU), the state’s largest union and professional association for registered nurses and health care professionals, announces its endorsement and strong support for Stephan Hay, Democratic candidate for the 3rd Worcester District.
“Stephan Hay is committed to supporting a progressive agenda to create jobs with living wages, while providing citizens with quality housing, education and health care,” MNA President Donna Kelly-Williams said. “Hay supports nurses’ values, including safe patient limits, and will fight for stronger collective bargaining rights.
“He is a public official who cares about people and has demonstrated that he will do the work necessary to help them,” Kelly-Williams said. “Based on his clear understanding of the vital role nurses play in delivering safe, high-quality patient care, Hay has pledged to support efforts to improve that care through legislation.”
Hay, a Fitchburg resident, has a long history of civic involvement and giving back to his community. He is the director of First Parish Housing of Fitchburg and an 18-year city councilor who holds a master’s degree from Rutgers University. Hay defeated fellow Democrats Joe Byrne and Kimatra Maxwell to win the Democratic nomination in early February. He faces Republican Dean Tran in a special election scheduled for March 1.
Laurie Grover, a registered nurse with the Department of Mental Health at Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital, has lived in Fitchburg for the past 30 years. She is backing Hay on March 1 because he is dedicated to his community and values hard work and honesty.
“We need someone at the State House who understand nurses and puts patients first,” Grover said. “Stephan Hay supports what I believe in, and so he has my vote.”
