The Massachusetts Nurses Association is sad to report the passing of Jane S. Hanron, RN, a dedicated nurse educator who touched thousands of lives through her teaching and leadership in professional associations. Hanron was a former Treasurer and Vice President of the MNA and was active in the association and its committees for many years.
After graduating from Haverhill High School in 1940, Hanron attended the Newton Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing, served in the United States Navy Nurse Corps as an officer during World War II and then earned additional degrees at Vanderbilt University and Northeastern University. Hanron continued her nursing career in public health in Michigan and as Director of the Massachusetts Memorial School of Nursing in Boston. She went on to publish writings about the “Essentials of Medicine” from a nursing perspective.
Hanron taught students for three decades as a faculty member of the Boston College School of Nursing. To assist nurses seeking to re-enter the profession, Hanron developed a course that turned into the Department of Continuing Education at Boston College’s nursing school. She was also appointed to a Governor’s Task Force that formalized RN licensing requirements in Massachusetts. Hanron’s family recalled her passion for her family, church, and charitable causes.
