Combatng the Stigma of Addiction in Healthcare: Nursing Considerations

Stigma is a major barrier to quality healthcare for people who use drugs and suffer from substance use disease. Experiences of dehumanization by health care workers are associated with care avoidance and self-directed hospital discharge among people who use drugs. It’s important that nurses understand the tools that destigmatize care at the individual level is an critical step toward improving care for people use drugs within the health care environment. This program will review relevant skills that will support patients encouraging them to share their challenges with addiction without judgment
